The Crimean War

This is my project on the Crimean War, which is a war that took place between 1853-1856. It was fought between Russia against Turkey, Britain, France and the small state Piedmont Sardinia it was during this war that the famous charge of the 'Charge of the light brigade' occurred. It contained many modern features including photography and the beginning of proper military medicine, despite this it was the last war that was fought in brightly couloured uniforms. It is interesting because the hardships that the common infantry man had to endure. We know a lot about the war because a man called William Russell wrote stories from the Crimea and sent them to London where they were they were published in the Times newspaper, he was the first war correspondent.

Where is the Crimea?

Sebastopol Harbour before the siege

The Crimea is a peninsula in the Black Sea the Russians had a large naval base in there in a place called Sebastopol. It was feared that the Russians could attack Turkey and the eastern Mediterranean Why was Britain in the war? Britain was in the war because it was afraid that if Russia took control of Turkey Russia would become to powerful, and it would also have access to India, which belonged to Britain (because of colonialism) and because Britain also kept a watchful eye on its neighbours.
