Introduction to Web Page Design Using Macromedia Dreamweaver

Tuesday 6pm-9pm

This course is an introduction to the use of Macromedia Dreamweaver within web page design. An outline of the course is included on this sheet. You should already have a basic knowledge of Apple Mac/PC computers. The course will enable you acquire the skills for further study, such as our OCR CIT Advanced Web Design course.

Assessment

There are no examinations. Assessment is by short assignment and exercises done during the taught class and workshop. You will need to complete your own web page based on the session exercises.

Aims of the taught sessions:

To introduce participants to the BASIC elements of web page design and construction.

Objectives

1/ To start to develop good practice in page layout and design

2/ To appreciate Multimedia components of the internet web page

3/ To be able to use elementary features of a WYSIWYG editing and composition package

Session 1

Introduction and Overview of Course

Welcome to participantsOpen Dreamweaver and look at interface, ie, menu options and floating palettes

(Week One was interrupted by enrolment and so the 8 weeks begins from 26 September 2000 and not 19 September 2000)

Session 2

26 September

Defining a Site and Local Root Directory

Save graphics/images and page.htm filesCreate links from a page named index.htm and page_2.htm

View the Site MapView the HTML sourceView the page constructed in Dreamweaver in a Browser to look at how the viewer will see the page once onlineCheck links

Session 3

03 October

Page Layout

Go to www.webpagesthatsuck.com and look at their construction

Save a page from the internet, open it in Dreamweaver and look at their construction

Modify the elements of the saved internet page through use of Dreamweaver's floating palettes, i.e., borders, frames, tables, text styles, background image, other images

Session 4

10 October

Tables, text formatting and placing images

Open the Olive Branch site from the Dreamweaver folder on the computer's hard-drive and look at its elements and decide on how you might approach your own web pages by producing a brief list of pages you may like to see on your own web site

Your own Page I

Custom styles and Templates

Produce a Template page from which an editable area can be selected to change on all other linked pages

Place in pre-typed text and images into a sequence of linked pages

Session 6

31 October

Your own Page II

Attaching Behaviours to page elements

Add Rollovers to imagesView the Timeline and make an image move across the screen

Multimedia

Look at more dynamic web page elements such as animation, sound and videoGet to grips with terminology such as Flash, Shockwave and Realplayer

Your Own Page III 'Putting it all together'

Complete your site to a point where it has text links to other pages, images and rolloversGo to www.fortunecity.com and here you can upload your site to the web

Session 9

21 November

Your Own Page IV 'Putting it all together'

View your site through your own URL (the name you were given by www.fortunecity.com) Refine any mishaps i.e., broken links, missing images etc (that is if there are any)
